This High Protein Orange Julius Recipe looks and tastes like the real thing, but packs a good serving of protein in it. Easy to make, too!
Mine was the pina colada smoothie at Baskin Robbins. Sure, I was somewhat lactose intolerant and lived to regret it EVERY TIME... but damn, they were good!
My husband, on the other hand, was all about Orange Julius.
Sure, I’d seen them at various mall food courts over the years, but someone had once told me that they put raw eggs in them, and ... well, that was that. I had no interest at ALL.
As it turns out... that wasn’t quite accurate.
When looking into it - to recreate them for Porter - I learned that the raw egg thing had been discontinued in the early 80s.
When we started on this whole journey, playing around with fun ways to get our protein powder in, we decided to do a smoothie based on Orange Julius smoothies.
Anyway, luckily we were able to get out hands on the source material earlier this year - a bit of nostalgia for him, and an introduction for me.
It took a bit of experimentation, but this high protein Orange Julius recipe comes INCREDIBLY close to the real thing!
Enough talk about it though, let’s look at what ingredients you’ll need.

Ingredients
This recipe uses really basic ingredients - you shouldn’t have any trouble finding what you need in any grocery store.
As always, I have a few ingredient notes for you:
Vanilla Flavored Protein Powder
This recipe uses Vanilla Flavored Whey Protein Powder.
Personally, I keep a big canister of Revolution Nutrition's High Whey in Vanilla Cake on hand at all times, and use it in a TON of my recipe - baked goods, beverages, etc.
Use whatever vanilla protein powder that you like to drink, and fits your macros.
Unsweetened Almond Milk
Unsweetened Almond Milk has been my milk of choice for years now. It was a great dairy-free option when I could no longer handle cow’s milk, and it’s a fantastic, low carb option in general.
When it comes down to it, though... depending on your macros, you can use pretty much any kind of milk in this recipe.
As far as non dairy milk goes, oat milk, Cashew Milk, Flax Milk, Macadamia Milk, and Coconut Milk are all good options.
Almond is the most neutral tasting option, though - so just know that the other plant based milks may change the overall flavour of the Orange Julius protein smoothie a bit.
Anyway, beyond the non-dairy milk options, regular milk works, too - just a bit higher carb.
You can use whatever you like, but I’d recommend at least 2% fat, for texture reasons. Whole milk is great... I find 1% / skim milk to be too watery, IMHO.
Collagen Peptides
This one is optional, but I like to add a scoop of Unflavored Collagen Peptides Powder, as an easy way to give my shake a boost of extra protein.
If you’re not particularly concerned about adding additional protein and don’t have any collagen on hand, you can feel free to skip it.
Sweetener
An optional ingredient, but nice if your protein powder isn’t sweet enough.
I find that whey protein powders tend to be more sweet than plant-based protein powders, but I’m sure that varies wildly by brand.
Either way, I recommend having some sweetener on hand, in case you need it. Aim for something neutral in flavour - white sugar if you’re OK with that, or something like Monk Fruit / Allulose if not.
Everything Else
Rounding out this recipe, you will need:
Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate
Ice Cubes (Smaller is better!)
Vanilla Extract
... I don’t have anything to add. Pretty straightforward stuff!
